Mount Crawford

A relatively easy hike of 5 miles (round trip) and a 2,100 foot ascent. Summit offers spectacular 360-degree views, including the Presidential Range and Crawford Notch. A good beginner hike.

At 3,119 feet, Mount Crawford shares the Bemis Ridge with lesser known peaks Mount Hope and Hart Ledge. Mt .Crawford is the first peak ascended by the historic Davis Path. The trail leading to the summit was constructed as a bridle path, so grades are easy to moderate all the way to Mount Washington, approximately 15 miles from the trailhead.

Their presence does not guarantee a summit but it certainly increases the likelihood!

What To Wear

PLEASE BRING THESE ITEMS WITH YOU FROM HOME

When selecting clothing for your adventure, think layers. Choose synthetic materials, wool, or fleece.
The saying is "Cotton Kills." It will absorb sweat and zap heat from your body in the wind - increasing the chances of hypothermia - even in summer.

[  ] Hiking Pants or Shorts Please wear hiking or athletic pants or shorts. The zip-off pants work really well.
Patagonia Capilene Men's
Patagonia Capilene Women's

[  ] Windbreaker Jacket  Mount Washington can be extremely windy. Please bring a layer to insulate and break the wind.

[  ] Baseball Cap and Sunglasses  Please bring a ball cap and sunglasses to protect your skin from the sun.

We recommend all hikers check weather conditions in advance, carry a current map and guidebook, along with a compass and knowledge of how to use it. For recommendations on how to plan a safe hike in the White Mountains, see: The 10 essentials.

Nutrition & Hydration

NUTRITION

It is important to continuously take in calories throughout the day. Every break you should eat a snack during the short 10 to 15 minute rest. Food is the wood to your fire and to keep it stoked it needs constant replenishing. Do not plan on cooking or preparing your snacks in the field. All food should be prepared and packed ready for immediate consumption.
We suggest crackers, pizza, candy bars, jerky, chips, cookies, trail mix, fruits, Gu, energy bars, and hard candies. Add peanut butter, cream cheese, hard cheese, or pepperoni for additional calories and taste. If you enjoy bread items, bagels work well. Include some salty snacks to replenish lost salts.

HYDRATION

To help prevent cramping and heat related injuries, you will need at least 2 liters of water per day. Water is preferred, but other liquids such as gatorade help replace electrolytes and work well, too! Hydration bladders are welcome if you have experience using them. Otherwise, bring 32oz. Wide Mouth Nalgene bottles.

FAQ's

Please read through the following frequently asked questions and answers. These will help you prepare for your trip and get a better understanding of what to expect.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

When considering clothing, you have to think in layers. You should be able to wear every layer that you bring at the same time. Hiking boots or sturdy trail-runners are acceptable footwear. Dressing in layers is a valid practice. You will need: lightweight wool socks, trekking pants, wicking t-shirt, wicking long sleeve shirt, light down or synthetic jacket, waterproof hard-shell jacket, waterproof hard shell pants (for rainy and windy days), lightweight gloves, warm hat and sunglasses. For time spent at camp, you may want to include synthetic base-layers.

WHAT SIZE BACKPACK SHOULD I USE?

Please bring a 20L-30L pack. Your pack must have a waist strap and chest strap and designed for backpacking.

WILL KIND OF FOOTWEAR SHOULD I WEAR?

Hiking Boots or Trail Runners.

DO I NEED ANY PRIOR EXPERIENCE?

You do not need prior experience to join us! We will be sure to take your experience level into consideration when planning which route we will attempt.

DO WE HIKE IN BAD WEATHER?

We usually will go out in the rain. Lightning will reschedule or end our adventure. Please plan for all weather conditions. We may just alter the plan based on the weather forecast.

AM I SUPPOSED TO TIP MY GUIDE(S)?

Tips are never expected, however if you think your guide did a great job, tips are welcomed and appreciated. A normal tip is 20% of the guide fees or $20 per guide per day.

WHERE SHOULD I STAY THE NIGHT BEFORE/AFTER?

We recommend The Bunkhouse at Northeast Mountaineering. For your convenience, we offer co-ed, hostel-style accommodations on site. The cost is $20 per person. To maximize your outdoor experience, we recommend that you stay in the area the night before your trip.

IS THERE A DEPOSIT TO SECURE MY SPOT ON AN ADVENTURE?

No. But you will be required to reach your fundraising minimum. If this is not the case on the day of the hike then you will be required to pay the difference.

WHERE AND WHEN DO WE MEET?

Checkin is at 8AM sharp at The Bunkhouse at Northeast Mountaineering, which is 1 mile north of Storyland on Rt. 16 in Glen, NH.

Want to go bigger? Join us on Mount Washington. Not quite ready for this? Join us on Mount Willard.

GENERAL POLICIES

GENERAL POLICIES

NEMs Adventure plans and itineraries are subject to change or adjustment based on a number of factors. These include, but are not limited to, route conditions, weather, terrain, and many other factors. NEM has complete discretion to change plans to accommodate any of these or other factors, including discretion to change program schedule or itinerary, and change guides or staff, as necessary for the proper and safe conduct of the program.

We reserve the right to cancel any program due to inadequate signups, weather or route conditions. In such a case, an NEM credit for the full value is given; however, NEM cannot be responsible for any additional expenses incurred in preparing for the program (i.e., airline tickets, equipment purchase or rental, hotel reservations).

NEM reserves the right to dismiss the Participant from a trip at any time if NEM determines, in its sole discretion, that the Participant is not physically, technically, or psychologically prepared for or capable of participating in the program. This includes being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

SUMMIT ATTEMPT

Northeast Mountaineering cannot guarantee that you will reach the summit. Weather, route conditions, your own abilities or the abilities of others may create circumstances that make an ascent unsafe, and you or your entire party will have to turn around without reaching the summit. Your program fee entitles you to one summit attempt on your specified dates.

SAFETY FIRST

RISK MANAGEMENT

Safety is NEM’s number one priority. Our guides manage significant hazards inherent in the mountains such as avalanches, ice fall, rock fall, inclement weather, and high winds, but they cannot eliminate them. NEM guides draw from their wealth of experience and training to make sound decisions that maximize your experience without compromising the necessary margin of safety. Please clearly understand that mountaineering and all other mountain adventures are inherently hazardous sports. You are choosing to engage in an activity in which participants have been injured and killed. While those accidents are indeed infrequent, they may occur at any time and be out of our control. We ask that participants acknowledge the risk and hazards of these sports, and make their own choices about whether or not to engage in these activities.

FUNDRAISING

FUNDRAISING MINIMUM

To participate in the hike, you will be responsible for a donation of the fundraising minimum. If the minimum is not reached, you will be responsible for donating the difference. If the minimum is still not met then you will be asked to sit out the hike. Sorry for the inconvenience.

CANCELLATION

There will be no refunds for cancellations. If you are unable to attend or choose to forgo the hike then your fundraising balance will not be refunded. There are no exceptions.
